House of Marley Island
dual Qi Wireless Charger

Sustainable Wireless Charging Concept Case Study

A proposed dual Qi wireless charger developed for House of Marley, designed to charge up to two compatible devices simultaneously while extending the brand’s sustainable accessory language into a multi-device charging format.

Island explored how everyday wireless charging could become more useful, organized, and brand-aligned through dual-device functionality, natural material cues, compact product architecture, and consumer electronics accessory development.

Project Overview

House of Marley’s accessory portfolio created an opportunity to explore wireless charging beyond a single-device pad.

Island was developed as a proposed dual Qi charger that could charge up to two compatible devices simultaneously. The concept addressed a common user need: reducing charging clutter while creating a more intentional place for multiple everyday devices.

The product combined consumer electronics functionality with House of Marley’s material-driven brand language, including sustainable design cues, compact form, and a lifestyle-oriented charging experience.

The Opportunity

I contributed to the product development direction across product positioning, form refinement, material review, supplier coordination, packaging thinking, and launch-readiness planning.

My responsibilities included:

  • Supporting product direction for a dual-device wireless charging concept

  • Reviewing product form, proportions, device placement, and charging zones

  • Evaluating how two devices could sit on the product simultaneously

  • Supporting material and CMF alignment with the House of Marley brand

  • Coordinating with OEM partners on product feasibility and sample development

  • Reviewing charging usability, cable access, product stability, and tabletop footprint

  • Considering packaging requirements and consumer-facing product communication

  • Supporting pre-launch product-development planning

My Role

I contributed to the product development process across product positioning, material review, supplier coordination, sample evaluation, packaging readiness, and launch support.

My responsibilities included:

  • Supporting the product direction for a sustainable wireless charging accessory

  • Reviewing product form, proportions, material transitions, and finish details

  • Coordinating with OEM partners on product execution and sample development

  • Evaluating bamboo surface quality, fit, finish, and perceived value

  • Reviewing charging usability, cable access, device placement, and product stability

  • Supporting CMF alignment with the House of Marley brand language

  • Coordinating packaging requirements and consumer-facing product communication

  • Supporting retail and e-commerce launch readiness

Development Approach

  • The product needed to solve a more advanced charging need than a single pad.

    Use cases included:

    • Charging two phones

    • Charging a phone and earbuds

    • Shared charging on a desk or nightstand

    • Reducing cable clutter

    • Creating a dedicated device drop zone

    • Supporting everyday home and office routines

The concept needed to feel simple even though it supported more functionality than a standard wireless charger.

  • Dual-device charging required clear placement zones and enough spacing for two compatible devices.

    Development considerations included:

    • Charging coil placement

    • Device spacing

    • Product footprint

    • Phone orientation

    • Access to screens and notifications

    • Cable exit location

    • Heat and charging-performance considerations

    • User understanding of where to place each device

The layout needed to make simultaneous charging intuitive without adding unnecessary complexity.

  • Island needed to feel connected to the House of Marley ecosystem rather than a generic electronics accessory.

    Development focused on:

    • Natural material cues

    • Recycled-material positioning

    • Warm tactile finishes

    • Minimal visual clutter

    • Brand-appropriate logo placement

    • Cohesion with One Drop and other House of Marley accessories

    • A form language that felt appropriate for home and lifestyle environments

The material direction helped create differentiation in a crowded wireless charging category.

  • A dual charger needs enough surface area for two devices, but it cannot become oversized for a desk or nightstand.

    Product refinement focused on:

    • Compact overall footprint

    • Device placement clarity

    • Stable tabletop use

    • Cable routing

    • Low-profile form

    • Ease of use

    • Visual balance with two devices installed

    • Product proportions that felt intentional rather than oversized

The goal was to create a charging product that felt organized, useful, and visually calm.

  • The concept required coordination around electronics, material execution, assembly, and cost.

    Supplier and development considerations included:

    • Dual Qi charging component integration

    • Internal layout and coil spacing

    • Housing construction

    • Material and finish samples

    • Cable and power input requirements

    • Product dimensions and tolerances

    • Assembly and quality expectations

    • Packaging fit and protection

    • Production-readiness planning

This work helped evaluate how the concept could move toward manufacturing if advanced further.

  • Because dual wireless charging can be misunderstood quickly, packaging needed to explain the function clearly.

Retail and e-commerce communication would need to address:

    • Dual-device charging

    • Qi compatibility

    • Device placement

    • Included cable or power requirements

    • Sustainable material story

    • Compact home and desk use

    • Brand and lifestyle positioning

    • Product imagery and feature callouts

The concept was developed with potential commercial presentation in mind, even though it did not move forward to release.
