Stir it up slipmats

Sustainable Audio Accessory Concept Case Study

A proposed slipmat accessory collection developed for the House of Marley Stir It Up turntable ecosystem.

The project explored how a simple audio accessory could extend the brand’s music lifestyle positioning through graphic direction, material cues, turntable compatibility, packaging thinking, and product-family storytelling.

Role: Product Development and Industrial Design
Brand: House of Marley
Category: Sustainable Audio Accessories
Product Type: Turntable Slipmat Concept
Focus: Accessory Line Extension, Brand Alignment, Graphic Direction, Material Strategy, Packaging Concept

House of Marley’s Stir It Up turntable represented the brand’s connection to music, natural materials, and sustainable lifestyle electronics.

The slipmat concept was developed as a proposed accessory extension for that ecosystem. While physically simple, the product had strong visual potential because the slipmat sits directly on the platter, becoming part of the everyday listening experience.

The goal was to explore how a turntable accessory could support the House of Marley brand through music culture, material storytelling, visual identity, and potential retail or e-commerce presentation.

Project Overview

The Stir It Up turntable created a natural opportunity for accessory expansion.

A slipmat could:

  • Complement the existing turntable

  • Reinforce the brand’s music and vinyl-listening lifestyle

  • Create a visible surface for graphic storytelling

  • Support a low-complexity accessory add-on

  • Extend the product family without requiring electronics development

  • Strengthen e-commerce and lifestyle presentation

  • Give customers another way to personalize their setup

The challenge was to make a simple accessory feel purposeful, brand-aligned, and commercially considered.

The Opportunity

Development Approach

The slipmat needed to visually complement the Stir It Up turntable’s material palette and product language.

Design review focused on:

  • Natural material cues

  • Music and vinyl culture references

  • Graphic restraint

  • Brand consistency

  • Compatibility with the platter surface

  • Visual balance with the tonearm, wood base, and turntable hardware

The product needed to enhance the listening setup without overpowering the turntable itself.

1. Defined the Accessory Role

The slipmat needed to function as more than a replacement part.

It was positioned as a brand extension: a visible, affordable, and expressive accessory that could complement the Stir It Up turntable and support the broader House of Marley audio lifestyle.

Development considerations included:

  • Turntable compatibility

  • Everyday handling

  • Visual impact during use

  • Brand storytelling

  • Material feel

  • Potential packaging format

  • Add-on product value

2. Connected the Concept to the Turntable

Even a simple accessory still needs to work correctly.

The concept considered:

  • Slipmat thickness

  • Surface feel

  • Record contact

  • Center-hole alignment

  • Fit on the platter

  • Durability during repeated use

  • Handling during record changes

  • Visual wear over time

The product needed to maintain the functional expectations of a turntable slipmat while supporting the intended lifestyle presentation.

3. Explored Graphic and Material Direction

Because the slipmat surface is highly visible, graphic direction was central to the concept.

Exploration focused on:

  • Circular artwork suited to rotation

  • Brand-aligned visual motifs

  • Sustainable and natural material cues

  • Subtle versus high-impact graphic options

  • Surface texture and perceived quality

  • How would the product be photographed for online presentation

The goal was to create a visual direction that felt connected to House of Marley while still appealing to vinyl listeners.

4. Considered Product Function

5. Considered Packaging and Presentation

The concept was developed with potential commercial presentation in mind.

Packaging and e-commerce considerations included:

  • Flat accessory packaging

  • Product visibility

  • Turntable compatibility messaging

  • Material or sustainability callouts

  • Lifestyle imagery

  • Brand storytelling

  • Add-on accessory positioning

  • Product photography and online presentation

Key Product Decisions

  • Because the slipmat was physically simple, the value needed to come from brand fit, graphic direction, material feel, and presentation.

  • The slipmat needed to be visually interesting without competing with the turntable or feeling overly decorative.

  • The concept needed to connect vinyl culture with House of Marley’s sustainable materials and lifestyle positioning.

  • The product needed to feel worthwhile as an add-on accessory without adding unnecessary manufacturing or packaging complexity.

Outcome

The Stir It Up Slipmats did not move forward to commercial launch, but the project remains a strong example of accessory line-extension thinking within a branded audio ecosystem.
The work demonstrates how I approach early-stage product opportunities: identifying the product's role, aligning it with brand strategy, considering user interaction, exploring material and graphic directions, and preparing the concept for potential packaging and e-commerce presentation.
Its value was in showing how a simple accessory could reinforce brand identity, expand an audio lifestyle portfolio, and create a meaningful product touchpoint around an existing hero product.
